“Sex matters because we live in a sexist world. If we take away the language to describe the biological reality of being female, we risk losing the ability to fight back against poor treatment on the basis of our biological sex. As a writer about female biological experiences, I have been pressured to change my language. I have refused on the grounds that if you change the meaning of the word ‘woman’ from a descriptor of biological sex, to an identity that anyone may adopt, this will quite clearly have a negative impact on women’s hard-won rights to female-only spaces, shortlists and sports, and on data and research.”
