We call for a “Cass Review for Education”

Letter to Gillian Keegan

Sex Matters together with Bayswater Support Group, Fair Play For Women, LGB Alliance, Safe Schools Alliance and Transgender Trend have written to the new Secretary of State for Education, Gillian Keegan, to draw her attention to the problem of gender ideology being promoted in schools. We ask her to:

  • ensure that the Department for Education publishes its long-awaited guidance for schools in England, in line with the previous Attorney General’s advice
  • take steps to ensure that parents can inspect all relationship and sex-education teaching materials
  • commission an independent expert review of the promotion of gender ideology in schools, and its impact on gender distress and on child safeguarding.

Our letter is featured in The Times today.

On relationship and sex education, the Department for Education responded:

“Schools are legally required to engage with parents on the teaching of relationships, sex and health education. Parents should be aware of what their children are being taught, especially relating to the teaching of sensitive topics. We are writing to all schools this term to emphasise this and to make it clear that if a parent requests to see teaching materials, copyright law does not prevent a school from sharing them with parents in person on the school premises.”
