Campaign update and appeal

Let’s get it done – the story so far

Sex Matters is campaigning for the government to make a one-line change to the law to make clear that the protected characteristic of “sex” in the Equality Act means sex. This would make it easier to protect single-sex services, sports and associations.

Read about the story so far, from the launch of the petition in November 2022 to the Westminster Hall debate in June 2023.

What next?

We are getting ready to launch the next stage of the campaign in order to keep the pressure on the government to take action, ideally before the next election. It needs to act with urgency.

We got started at an event on freedom of speech at the House of Lords on 20th September.

We are now working on a campaign pack that our supporters can use to start even more conversations, to speak to their MP and to get as many others as possible to speak up to say: “I support single-sex services.” We will also be sharing materials with Women’s Rights Network and other groups that want to be involved (get in touch with [email protected]).

Will you support us?

Donate £10 today to help kickstart production of our campaign pack, and you’ll be one of the first to receive it when it’s finished – we’re hoping to include posters, conversation cards and wristbands.
